Seal Coast Safari

Seal Coast Safari is truly a unique experience — we are the only tour company with permission to operate on Terawhiti Station. The tour offers a stunning variety of topics to share with guests, including conservation, wind turbines, native flora and fauna, and of course, our incredible New Zealand fur seals.

Below, you’ll find a Google Doc containing facts and stories to assist you during your tours, as well as several training videos. Please make sure to watch all of them before your first tour.

Daily Checklist

There are a few things you should do to make sure you’re set up for success on the day. Start by checking your manifest to see how many passengers you’re expecting — it’s always better to overpack than underpack. On cruise ship days especially, be prepared for a full day out.

Here are some essential things to check before you depart each time:

(this checklist is also on the walls around the base)

  • Mercedes is clean inside and out

  • On your Merc keys make sure there is a gate key ( this should always be the case but just double check)

  •  Cold Drinks (water/sodas/ ice packs)

  • Biscuits/Bars (include Gluten free option)

  • Cruise Days: High vis/port ID/ Steel toed caps

  • Instnat Coffe packets/sugars/ tea/ milo

  • Hot Water Thermos

  • Spoons (for mixing drinks)

Healthy and Safety

All of our vehicles are equipped with a first aid kit and vomit bags, which are occasionally needed on Seal Coast Safari since the roads can be quite winding. Please encourage guests who are prone to motion sickness to look straight out the window and get some fresh air whenever possible.

Here are some additional health and safety points to keep in mind for this tour.

  •  Ensure guests have appropriate footwear and weather protection.

  • Check the extent guests can understand your instructions in English

  • Take care when entering and exiting the van

  •  Explain that under New Zealand law you must wear a seatbelt, but it is the responsibility of the passenger to do so. Children under 16 are the caregiver’s responsibility. If not accompanied, it is the driver’s responsibility.

  • Remind clients to take their bags with them, or at least tuck them under seats when not in vehicles.

  •  Warn guests about possible hazards that will be encountered during the tour: including uneven ground at Otari Wilton's Bush and the Seal Coast Colony (loose gravel/large stones, soft dirt, mud, dung, and tree roots)

  • Advise the guests to be very careful when entering/exiting the van on a windy day to watch out for the doors being caught by the wind.

Pro Tip: On extremely windy days don't use the regular door and only use the sliding door. It has occurred when a door was ripped away in the wind :)

  • Seals are wild animals and must not be approached. They will defend themselves if they feel threatened. Adult seals can move surprisingly quickly on land. While they can look harmless, seals can inflict serious injuries and can carry infectious diseases.

  • Guests must stay at least 20 meters away from seals at all times (advise that to get closer is a breach of our tour permit with DOC)
